How to Clean Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors are a timeless investment due to a combination of practical and aesthetic reasons, including durability, ease of cleaning, allergy-friendly nature, and eternal beauty.

But as beautiful as they are, they demand a little extra care to stay that way. Daily foot traffic, scuffs, scratches, spills, moisture, dirt, dust, and debris can slowly dull their natural finish or even cause lasting damage if not cleaned correctly.

Just because a surface looks clean doesn’t mean it’s germ-free. Lysol® kills up to 99.9% of bacteria and viruses, helping you maintain not only the look, but also the hygiene of your hardwood floors.

But have no fear—with the right technique and products, such as Lysol® Multi-Surface Liquid Cleaner, you can keep your hardwood gleaming for years to come.

In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to clean hardwood floors safely and effectively—  without risking scratches, warping, or residue buildup.

Best way to clean hardwood floors

Step 1: Sweep the floor

Use a soft-bristle broom or a vacuum cleaner to remove loose dirt, dust, grime, and debris from the floor surface. Sweep in the direction of the wood grain to prevent these impurities from scratching the surface.

Step 2: Dust the floor with a dry microfiber mop

After sweeping, go over the floor with a dry microfiber mop to pick up any remaining fine dust or pet hair. This step preps the floor for damp cleaning while maintaining a smooth, streak-free appearance.

Step 3: Make a hardwood floor cleaner

In a bucket, combine 1 gallon of warm water with ¼ cup (2 fl. oz.) of Lysol® Multi-Surface Liquid Cleaner. We recommend using it at full strength to clean dirt, dust, grime, and stains across the entire surface area of your floor. If using at full strength, always remember to rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Additionally, to clean the baseboards and tile grout, you can use Lysol® Multi-Purpose Cleaner Spray. It is ideal for hard, non-porous surfaces and is especially beneficial in kitchens, bathrooms, and other frequently used areas of the house. It effectively kills 99.99% of viruses and bacteria, ensuring long-lasting freshness.

Step 4: Mop the floor

Dampen (don’t soak) your microfiber mop with the cleaning solution and gently mop the floor, again following the grain. Use light pressure and avoid excess moisture, which can seep into seams and cause swelling. Wipe in small sections and rinse your mop frequently for optimal results.

Step 5: Dry the floor

Once you've finished mopping, use a clean, dry cloth or towel to go over the floor and remove any remaining moisture. This is crucial for preventing water damage and streaks. If possible, open windows or turn on fans to speed up the drying process and protect the floor’s finish.
